Blog Pro

Updated by Darryl Waterhouse on 13 October 2026 6 min read

Blog Pro is the paid edition of Blog. It keeps everything Blog does and adds several blogs on one site, many more layouts, a theme designer with self-hosted fonts, page transitions and card effects, author profiles and pages, and privacy-first media embeds. The Looks and settings and Media and shortcodes pages cover those parts in detail.

What it does

Everything in the free Blog, plus:

  • Several blogs - each with its own address, posts, settings and look. Categories and authors are shared.
  • More looks - 18 post layouts, 19 listing displays, 6 headers for a blog's front page, and author page and authors index styles.
  • Appearance - fonts, colours, corners and page width for all blogs or one blog, with 10 presets and a live preview.
  • Motion - page transitions, cards that appear as you scroll, and card effects under the pointer.
  • Authors - a public profile for each writer, author pages, and an optional page listing all authors.
  • Media - videos, audio, galleries, link cards and maps in any page or post, loaded only when a reader clicks.

Upgrading from the free Blog

Blog Pro uses the free Blog's posts, categories and comments. When you turn it on:

  • Nothing a reader sees changes. Your existing blog becomes Blog Pro's first blog, at the same address, with the same settings and layouts.
  • The free Blog's screens and public pages step aside while Blog Pro is on. You work in the Blog Pro screens instead; the sidebar item is still called Blog.
  • Blog Pro keeps its own copy of the settings from the first time you save anything in it. It never changes the free Blog's settings.

If Blog Pro is turned off or its licence lapses

The free Blog takes over again after the site restarts, with all your posts, categories and comments. For that to happen the free Blog must still be installed and switched on. Then:

  • The first blog carries on at the address and with the settings the free Blog had. Changes you made to them in Blog Pro do not carry over.
  • Posts in your other blogs are kept but hidden from the public site. They still appear in the Posts list.
  • Blog Pro's theme, fonts, motion, author pages and authors index stop.
  • Media shortcodes such as [video] and [gallery] are no longer turned into players.

Turn Blog Pro back on and everything returns as it was.

Getting started

  1. Open Blog from the admin sidebar. The tab bar at the top links Posts, Blogs, Appearance, Authors, Categories and Comments.
  2. To add a second blog, go to Blogs and click New blog (admins only). Give it a Name and an Address such as /travel, and save.
  3. Go to Posts and click New post. Choose which Blog it belongs to, write it, and click Publish.
  4. Go to Appearance to pick a preset or set fonts and colours for all blogs or one.
  5. Click the Blog defaults cog in the banner to choose the listing display, post layout and motion every blog starts from.

Screens

Posts

As in the free Blog: status chips (All, Published, Drafts, Scheduled), search, category filter, sort, and a menu on each post with Edit, View on site, Copy link, Publish now, Unpublish, Duplicate as draft and Delete. With more than one blog there is also a Blog filter.

The three-dot button beside New post has a View link for each blog, Blogs..., Edit layouts in Blocks, and Add sample posts or Remove sample posts (admins only). Sample posts go into the blog you are filtered to, or the first.

Post editor

The same as the free Blog (title, slug, excerpt, content, SEO fields, layout, categories, tags, featured image, Save, Publish, Schedule, Move to drafts, Preview; two posts in one blog cannot share a slug, so a clashing save is refused with a message), plus:

  • Blog - which blog the post appears in. Moving a published post to another blog changes its address, so links to the old one stop working.
  • Featured video or audio - a YouTube, Vimeo, Loom, Spotify or SoundCloud link, or a video or sound file from Media. It leads the post in place of the picture, in layouts that show one. A post without a picture uses the video's own thumbnail on cards.
  • Insert media - builds a video, audio, gallery, link card or map shortcode and puts it where your cursor is.
  • Post layout offers Blog default (the blog's own setting, or the defaults) plus every layout.

Blogs

Lists every blog. Click New blog, or right-click a blog (or use its three-dot button) for Edit..., View on site, Show its posts, Appearance..., New post here, Add sample posts and Remove....

A blog has:

Field What it does
Name Shown on the blog's front page and in the navbar link.
Address Where the blog lives: /travel gives /travel/my-post, /travel/category/... and /travel/feed.xml. Applies as soon as you save. Changing it breaks links people saved.
Description Under the blog's name on its front page, and the description of its RSS feed.
Picture Used by the Banner and Split headers. Optional.
Link in the navbar Adds the blog to the navbar menu, named after the blog. Off removes only the link Blog Pro added, never one you made.

Below these are the blog's own settings. Anything left on Default follows the Blog defaults. See Looks and settings.

The first blog is where posts without a blog live, and it cannot be removed. Removing any other blog moves its posts to the first blog; nothing is deleted.

Appearance

Sets fonts, colours and shape for all blogs or for one blog, with a live preview. See Looks and settings.

Authors

Lists everyone who has written a post, and everyone whose role lets them write. Search by name. Right-click an author for Edit profile... and View author page.

A profile is the public face of a user:

Field What it does
Picture Choose a picture... from Media, or Remove.
Public name The name on posts and the author page. Leave empty to use the user's own name.
Address The last part of the author page's address, for example /blog/author/sam. Leave empty to use the user's id.
Title A line under the name, such as Editor or Guest contributor.
Bio A short biography.
Links Website, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Instagram, GitHub and YouTube. Only https:// addresses are kept.
Hide from the authors index Their posts stay, but they are left off the authors index and their name is not a link.

Writers can edit their own profile. Users with the Publish permission can edit anyone's. Email addresses are never shown on the site.

Categories and Comments

The same as the free Blog. Categories are shared by all blogs.

The public blogs

Each blog has these pages under its address (/blog below):

Address What it shows
/blog The blog's front page: its header and newest posts.
/blog/<slug> One post.
/blog/category/<slug> The blog's posts in a category.
/blog/tag/<tag> The blog's posts with a tag.
/blog/author/<address> An author's page, when Author pages is on.
/blog/authors Every author who writes for the blog, when Authors index is on.
/blog/feed.xml The blog's RSS feed.

Every blog's front page and public posts are added to your site's sitemap.

Permissions and roles

Blog Pro uses the same permissions and roles as the free Blog, shown in System > Roles under the Blog group:

Permission Actions
Blog posts (blog-posts) View, Write, Edit, Delete, Publish
Blog categories (blog-categories) View, Create, Edit, Delete
Blog comments (blog-comments) View, Moderate, Delete

All three are granted to the Admin role. Blog Author writes and edits their own posts and profile; Blog Editor can do everything with posts, categories and comments. Publish also lets a user see and edit everyone's posts and author profiles.

These are for admins (Admin and Super Admin) only: creating, editing and removing blogs, saving Appearance, saving the Blog defaults, and adding or removing sample posts.

The Blog sidebar item shows how many comments are waiting for approval, and a comment held for approval raises a notification, as in the free Blog.

Tips

  • Change the defaults behind the cog rather than each blog. A blog only needs its own setting where it should differ.
  • Start from an Appearance preset, then change what you want.
  • Give each writer a profile with a picture and a short bio before turning on Authors index.

Limitations

  • A post belongs to one blog only.
  • Categories and author profiles are shared by all blogs.
  • Blog Pro's layouts and effects need Blog Pro. If it is turned off, the free Blog shows the first blog with the free Blog's own settings.
