Card credits
Updated by Darryl Waterhouse on 14 October 2026 · 3 min read
Let other people send cards from your site, paying in card credits. You and your staff still send free.
Switching them on
Card credits are off until you switch them on. Open Card credits from the wallet button in the Cards banner, then press Switch on (or tick Card credits are on in the settings cog). Set your prices and packs first if you like.
Switching them off again closes the sign-up page, takes the packs off sale and holds card makers' cards until they are back on. Balances are kept.
How it works
- Card makers are people with the Card maker role. They see Cards, Card credits, their own contacts and calendar, and nothing else in the admin.
- What a card costs: sending one costs 1 credit for each person it goes to, or 2 for a premium design (rude designs by default). The editor shows the price before they send.
- When credits run out:
- A card for now or a date can't be sent; the editor says so.
- A repeating card (each birthday, a Calendar event) waits as Out of credits, and goes as soon as they top up. They get one notification and email a day.
Getting credits
- Buy a pack on Card credits (the wallet button in the Cards banner). Payment goes through your Shop, with whatever you've set up there (Stripe, PayPal or bank transfer). The packs are kept as Shop products automatically and never appear in your shop's own pages.
- Gift from my credits: send some credits to an email address. They leave your balance at once and come back if the gift is taken back or isn't claimed in time (30 days by default).
- Buy as a gift: buy a pack straight into a gift for someone, without touching your own balance.
- Given by you: under Card makers, give anyone credits, or take them back.
- On joining: optionally, each new card maker starts with a few free credits.
Taking things back, and the ledger
- Take back a gift that hasn't been claimed yet: on Give, right-click it under Gifts I've sent (or use its ⋮ button, or Shift+F10). Its link stops working and the credits come back to you.
- Card makers: click someone to give or take back credits; right-click (or ⋮) for their history or to see only them in the ledger.
- Ledger: every credit that has moved, newest first. Right-click a row to see only that person, give them credits or open their history.
Joining
A sign-up page (by default /cards/join, set in the settings cog) lets people make an account. They confirm their email address, then sign in. Someone who receives a gift can sign up straight from the gift's link, with no separate confirmation, and the credits are waiting when they sign in.
Settings (the cog on Card credits)
- Card credits are on: the switch for all of it.
- Sign-up: on or off, its address, and free credits for new card makers.
- Prices: credits per person, credits for a premium design, and which designs are premium.
- Packs: credits and price.
- Gifts: how long a gift can be claimed.
- Limits: the most people one card can go to, and the most cards a card maker can send in a day. Card makers send from your site's email address, so keep these sensible.
Needs
The Shop with a payment method set up, for buying packs (gifts and credits you give work without it), and the site able to send email (System > Site Settings > Email).
